14–21 June 2027 | 8 days | Maximum 15 participants
Eight days of real mountain adventure in Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains. High mountain passes, remote valleys, rocky trails, nights under the stars and views that make every kilometre worthwhile – even when the journey takes a little extra effort.
We will explore some of the less-travelled corners of the High Atlas, discover life in traditional Amazigh (Berber) villages, spend a night beside beautiful Lake Ifni and finish our adventure with an attempt to summit Mount Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest peak in North Africa.
This trek is for people who love mountains, enjoy being active and don’t need luxury to have a wonderful time. There will be some physical challenges, plenty of adventure and an incredible sense of space and freedom.
Sometimes, finding silence means climbing a little higher.
Our route takes us across high mountain passes, through remote valleys and small Amazigh villages, revealing the High Atlas at its wildest and most spectacular.
One of the highlights will be Lake Ifni, the largest natural lake in the High Atlas, situated at approximately 2,300 metres above sea level and surrounded by dramatic mountain slopes. We will pitch our tents beside the water and spend a night in this extraordinary setting. There is a good chance we will have the lake almost entirely to ourselves – on our previous treks, we met nobody there apart from local shepherds.
The final challenge is Mount Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest mountain in North Africa.
Rather than following the usual route from Imlil, we will approach Toubkal Base Camp from Lake Ifni, crossing the spectacular Tizi n’Ouanoums Pass. This is a much less frequently travelled route, offering a quieter and more adventurous experience. We are unlikely to encounter many other trekkers until we reach the refuge and the summit trail.
We trek with small daypacks. Our main luggage, tents and food supplies are carried by mules. An experienced local team of mountain guides and cooks accompanies us throughout the journey, preparing delicious Moroccan meals along the way. A freshly cooked lunch in the middle of the mountains tastes especially good after several hours of walking!
The trip will be led by Agata Orowiecka-Khidouma and Yassine Idmansour together with our local mountain team. Expect a small, friendly group, some challenging moments, plenty of mutual support and a good dose of humour.
This adventure is designed for people who love mountains and already have some hiking experience.
You don’t need to be a mountaineer or a professional athlete, but good physical fitness, experience of full-day hikes and a willingness to embrace a few days of simple mountain living are important.
The High Atlas can be surprising – both in its extraordinary beauty and in the length of its ascents.
Participants should be comfortable with:
We are not racing or trying to break records. We walk together, at a pace that takes the group’s abilities into account.
The Toubkal summit attempt depends on the weather, trail conditions and participants’ fitness. All final safety decisions are made in consultation with our local mountain guides.

After several weeks of trekking in the High Atlas, our mountain guides and I came up with a completely new unit of hiking time. When our guide Yassine says six-seven hours, Hassan the cook shakes his head and corrects him: seven-eight. And I add: probably eleven. That’s when we finally have a realistic estimate.
Moroccan mountain trails follow their own rules. Unlike many European hiking routes, they are not consistently marked, there are no signposts showing walking times, and ascents are not always predictable. Walking times depend on the terrain, weather and pace of the group. What you do get is an incredible experience of the mountains in their rawest and most majestic form.
And that is exactly why we go!
This adventure is not about breaking records or proving anything. It is about the joy of being in the mountains, sharing the journey, discovering beautiful landscapes and experiencing the satisfaction that comes with every climb. And if our six-seven hours eventually turns into eleven, at least we’ll have something to laugh about over dinner 🙂
We would love to have you join us!

Meals during the tour include carefully selected dishes prepared from fresh, local ingredients. Each day, participants can enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner that combine traditional regional flavors with light, balanced cuisine. This way, your journey becomes not only an adventure but also a culinary experience.

This is a challenging mountain adventure designed for people who enjoy hiking and have a good level of physical fitness. We’ll be walking for several hours each day, tackling steep ascents and descents, rocky trails and significant changes in altitude. The trek includes Lake Ifni and an ascent of Mount Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest peak in North Africa. Previous mountain hiking experience is strongly recommended.
Yes, some experience of hiking in the mountains is important. You don’t need to be a mountaineer or have technical climbing skills, but you should feel comfortable spending long days on mountain trails, including steep and uneven terrain. Regular hiking and good physical preparation will make the experience much more enjoyable.
Yes! Reaching the summit of Mount Toubkal (4,167 m) is one of the highlights of our adventure. The ascent is physically demanding, but it doesn’t normally require technical climbing skills in suitable summer conditions. The final decision to attempt the summit will depend on the weather, trail conditions and the group’s fitness and wellbeing.
Mount Toubkal reaches 4,167 metres, so altitude can affect anyone, regardless of fitness. Our programme includes time spent at higher elevations before the summit attempt, but this does not eliminate the risk of altitude sickness. Our experienced local guides will monitor the group’s wellbeing, and safety always comes before reaching the summit.
No. During the supported trekking sections, our mule team will transport the main luggage. You’ll only need a comfortable daypack with water, snacks, extra layers, sun protection and personal essentials.
Accommodation is simple and authentic, reflecting the character of a High Atlas mountain expedition. Depending on the stage of the trek, we’ll stay in local mountain accommodation, refuges or tents. This is an adventure focused on nature and the experience of travelling through the mountains rather than hotel-style comfort.
Our local team will prepare fresh, nourishing meals to keep us going throughout the journey. Expect traditional Moroccan dishes, including soups, vegetables, couscous, tagines, bread and plenty of mint tea. Vegetarian meals can be arranged. Please let us know about any dietary requirements before booking.
June is generally a good month for trekking in the High Atlas. Days can be warm and sunny, especially in the valleys, but temperatures drop considerably at higher altitudes and after sunset. Strong winds, rain and occasional cold conditions are also possible. Warm layers, waterproof clothing and proper hiking equipment are essential.
You’ll need sturdy, well-worn hiking boots, a comfortable daypack, breathable hiking clothes, warm layers, a waterproof jacket, sun protection, a headtorch and a reusable water bottle. Trekking poles are highly recommended, particularly for steep descents. We’ll send a detailed packing list before departure.
Our trek is led by experienced local Amazigh mountain guides who know the High Atlas intimately. They are supported by a local team responsible for logistics, luggage transport and meals. The group will also be accompanied by a Desert Stories representative.
We keep our groups small, with a maximum of 15 participants, plus our local mountain team. This allows us to create a friendly atmosphere while maintaining good organisation and personal attention throughout the trek.
Mountain conditions can change quickly. Our guides may adjust the route, change the schedule or cancel the summit attempt if necessary. If a participant is unable to continue, the team will assess the situation and arrange the safest practical solution. Safety always takes priority over completing the planned itinerary.
Absolutely! Many participants join our small-group adventures on their own. It’s a wonderful opportunity to meet like-minded travellers and share an unforgettable experience in the mountains.
Yes, basic travel insurance is included in the tour price. If you would prefer more comprehensive coverage, you can arrange additional insurance independently or contact us to upgrade your policy for an extra fee. We recommend making sure your insurance covers high-altitude trekking, including mountain rescue and emergency evacuation.
